Ben says that he forgot that he was supposed to be on Like a Version and "had to cover a popular song, and turned on my ipod and this was the most recently listened to song and found some drummers in the studio" (11/5/06 in Columbia, MO).... and tada, here we are. On the spot first time thing. Check how he's doing it now on other videos.

No shit, just because he doesn't have the same voice as Ben Gibbard or Sam Beam doesn't mean he has off vocals. Although I will make the argument that Connor Oberst has so-so vocal skills, but extremely mad lyrical skills!
