Really impressed by Deller...he is very good. I have always been told that the countertenors before 1980 or so was no good...but he is really great.

Alfred Deller (1912-1979) was the first countertenor to make a solo career for himself. He was heard by Michael Tippett in the early 1940's and he helped him gain work. In the late 50's-early 60's the high tenor Russell Oberlin was singing similar songs. In the late 1960's James Bowman, Paul Esswood and Charles Brett became well known and the American John Angelo Messana also had a solo career.

The English countertenors of the past were often cathedral trebles who sang in college chapels whilst at university. This training may have influenced how they sounded as professional singers.

A lovely, characteristic piece of Deller singing. Where do you find these Handel and Bach pieces?
Most of my Deller CD's are of Purcell and the Lutenists. I've been a fan since I first heard his voice in the late 60's.
