Industrial Ghosts - USA

Back

June 2008
Detroit was once the symbol of America's industrial power; the birthplace of Ford, the assembly line and the home of GM. But now it feels more like a ghost town littered with abandoned buildings.

In 1913 Detroit was booming but when the Great Depression hit, this abruptly ended. Between 2006 and 2008 four of GM's plants in Michigan closed, and more than 15,000 are homeless in the city. "There's no work in Michigan... all you see is vacant houses" explains one homeless resident. As industries move to areas with cheaper labour, former assembly line workers and buildings are left useless.

I have never been to Detroit but I can guess which city functions still work perfectly.
#1. Tax enforcement
#2. Union enforcement
#3. Code enforcement
#4. Victim disarmament (aka law enforcement)

The sad thing is that thousands of Americans are cheering the decline of Detroit and are actually mourning the fact that the Automobile Industry in the USA had been subsidized for a few months as they try to save themselves. I've dealt with some of these people themselves, there's many more who agree with them but don't state it out loud.

And we wonder why Canada and Europe are cleaning our clocks (never mind Vietnam or Iraq).

The problem is not with Americans not working hard, but with their govt. in collusion with financiers STEALING from them.

@ TzarNicolasII

Great post but unless shit gets sooooo bad that everyone is living like shit will things change. It will take people reaching 99% dissatisfaction before things change. With that though, you have to hope the change is a positive one and not a perverted back lash that could lead us straight to hell.

Sorry, what has been going on the US past few decades is not capitalism at all...its more akin to corporatism or fascism. Capitalism died long ago.
experimentsingeekdom (December 25, 2008 at 5:54 pm)
The commentator says things are not so bad because there "the homeless have food delivered by humanitarian organizations"...what the f..??? And I'm confused - is this Iraq or USA?
